Job Summary The Assistant Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) plays a pivotal role in ensuring Clemson University maintains compliance with state and federal requirements that apply to research and teaching applications of radioactive materials (RAM), radiation‑producing devices, lasers, and sources of non‑ionizing radiation. Operating with minimal supervision, the ARSO leads complex projects and serves as a technical expert across multiple functional areas. This role requires extensive collaboration with principal investigators, research staff, students, and support teams to review research protocols, identify potential compliance risks, and provide expert guidance to maintain a safe, compliant research environment. Assists the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in development, implementation, and administration of the Radiation Safety and Laser Safety Programs at Clemson University and Clemson facilities statewide. ARSO must be capable of performing RSO duties and must be qualified to be named as RSO on the Clemson University RAM License in the event of the RSO's prolonged absence. Job Duties Radiation Safety Program Implementation (20%): Develop, implement, review formal procedures for all aspects of the Radiation Safety Program; provide classroom training; participate in database development; supervise staff and students. X‑ray and Non‑ionizing Radiation Safety (40%): Serve as primary contact; serve as Laser Safety Officer; develop and implement laser and non‑ionizing radiation safety programs; provide training and inspections; assist laser users with hazard evaluation and PPE selection. Radioactive Waste Disposal and Equipment Maintenance (20%): Formulate & update procedures; oversee waste collection and processing; direct ordering, receipt, inventory tracking; assist Hazardous Waste Management; maintain & calibrate detection equipment. Inspecting and Compliance (10%): Conduct laboratory inspections; evaluate federal and state regulatory compliance. Other Duties as Assigned (10%): Prepare reports, notices, letters; perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements High School or Equivalent education. 1+ year work experience. Preferred Requirements First Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics or closely related field. 3+ years work experience. Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or eligible for certification. National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT). Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO). Responsibilities Job Knowledge: Firm working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures; ability to apply in varied situations. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise work of others; supervise student workers only. Budgetary Responsibilities: No fiscal responsibility. Salary is dependent upon several factors including prior experience, knowledge, skills, and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines. Essential Personnel Level Normal Operations Required to follow emergency facility closure directives; not normally expected to work on‑site during emergency situations.
