Position Overview Under the supervision of the Laboratory Safety Manager, the Research Safety Specialist will assist with the implementation of the university research safety program. The role conducts comprehensive laboratory, biological, and radiation safety inspections to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations, and provides training and safety-related regulatory assistance to the research community. Responsibilities Conduct field audits for compliance with program regulations; document results and recommend corrective actions where non-compliance is found; follow up as required. Develop and implement safety programs to meet university and regulatory requirements; establish, document, and communicate standards, guidelines, and procedures. Assess existing programs for adequacy and regulatory compliance; recommend enhancements or modifications as required. Maintain current knowledge of existing and pending legislation related to safety and health; ensure program designs reflect the latest standards and regulations. Develop and deliver client training for assigned safety programs. Assist with shipping, receipt, storage, and control of radioactive materials; develop and coordinate emergency response procedures; respond to emergencies and ensure proper safety methods are followed. Prepare reports as required and assist Principal Investigators and researchers in developing lab-specific SOPs related to operations, exposures, calibrations, lasers, contamination surveys, closeouts, etc.; assist in protocol review. Perform other related duties as assigned; participate in the university Emergency Operations Plan and related training; act as a mandated reporter as required by law and USC policy. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or other related sciences. Two (2) years of work experience; combination of education/experience may substitute for minimum experience. Thorough knowledge of EH&S field(s), related laws and regulations; general knowledge of all EH&S fields. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to convey technical information to non-technical personnel; ability to maintain data and records; strong analytical and organizational skills. Proven written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related data-management software. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field. Three (3) years or more of work experience; combination of education/experience may substitute for minimum experience. Certified with the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) or eligible to take CHP exam; extensive knowledge of health physics, radiation safety, and related equipment. Experience with DOT rules and regulations related to transportation of radioactive materials; ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with diverse groups. Salary and Benefits Salary Range: The annual base salary range for this position is $101,058.44 - $135,679.91.
